Landscape use and food habits of the chilla fox (<i>Lycalopex griseus,</i> Gray) and domestic dog (<i>Canis lupus familiaris</i>) in a peri-urban environment of south-central Chile

Abstract Cities intensely modify natural environments and impose pressures on biodiversity. In this sense, carnivorous mammals are one of the groups most affected due to their food space requirements. The feeding spatial behavior chilla fox ( Lycalopex griseus , G., 1837) dogs were studied in vicinity a peri-urban protected area south-central Chile. diet both canids was compared seasonally, for which feces collected along trails three habitats: native forest, exotic plantations scrublands. Dog at same site establish whether they avoided by foxes. Chilla has been highlighted consuming high proportion hares followed rodents Muridae family, being Chile, whereas showed predominant consumption anthropogenic food. Significant differences observed dietary diversity, mainly summer fall. No segregation with domestic dog, evidenced overlap use all habitats.
